No 1. The eco-friendly painter

The Artisan Painter is an eco-friendly painting and decorating company, using environmentally friendly paints and materials. For all interior projects I highly promote the use of petro-chemical free eco-paints. I mainly use Little Greene, Earthborn clay paints or Farrow & Ball. In some circumstances - mainly exterior work, I use regular household names like Dulux & Johnstons paints. If you’d like to read more about this important subject this short article is very informative.

It’s fantastic that a recent awareness in the environmental movement and advancement in paint technology have pushed household paint manufacturers to offer eco-friendly paints. It’s a real minefield though when you begin to look into the ingredients of most paints labelled as ‘eco- friendly’ or having low VOC’s levels (Volatile organic compounds). Even though these levels may have been reduced they still have all sorts of nasty constituents like VOC’s, formaldehyde, ammonium, heavy metals and titanium dioxide. Worse still, to achieve the low VOC standards and still produce a paint which can achieve a professional finish with fast drying times, many manufacturers are piling in tons of horrible new additives to the their new technology paints!

As your painter and decorator it is important for me to take the initiative and spread the awareness to my customers. Regular household paints can pollute the family home for up to 2 years with harmful chemicals, aggravating allergies, asthma and causing headaches and drowsiness. Not to mention how harmful they can be to the painters and decorators applying them.

You may be concerned about an increase in the paint costs, but eco-paints are actually very competitively priced (around the same price as premium paints), especially when considering the natural ingredients they contain and the companies’ commitment to eco friendly paint production, manufacturing and packaging.

Using eco-paints is not without its challenges though, there are some important steps that are needed during preparation to achieve the professional finish of petro-chemical paints. This is where my expertise ensures everything is done correctly. After years of experience using different eco-paint brands I can also advise on eco-paints to avoid, I have to say that some are absolutely rubbish! and won’t achieve a professional finish for some applications.

The one eco-paint company that I can highly recommend that bridges that important gap between a professional highly durable finish and eco-friendly credentials is Little Greene.

The key advantages of using eco paints…

  • Low VOC content.

Using paints with low VOC (volatile organic compound) levels offers several advantages: they improve indoor air quality, reduce strong odors during application, and create a healthier environment for people with allergies. Low-VOC paints are also better for the environment, releasing fewer pollutants into the air while still providing a durable, high-quality coverage.

  • Safer for Health and Well-Being.

Free from harsh chemicals, toxins, and plasticisers, eco-paints minimize the risk of allergic reactions, respiratory irritation, and long-term exposure issues. This makes them particularly suited for nurseries, bedrooms, and spaces used by children or those with asthma.

  • Natural & sustainable materials.

Brands like Earthborn and Little Greene use natural binders, pigments, and fillers such as clay, plant oils, and minerals. By avoiding synthetic petrochemical derivatives, these paints provide a more environmentally responsible alternative that reduces reliance on fossil fuels.

  • Environmentally Friendly Production.

Eco-paint manufacturers prioritize sustainable production methods, including reduced energy usage, recyclable packaging, and responsible sourcing of raw materials. Their processes are designed to lower carbon footprints and support a more circular, eco-conscious economy.

  • Breathable and Moisture-Regulating.

Many natural paints, especially clay and mineral-based formulas allow walls to “breathe,” helping to regulate humidity levels and reduce condensation or mould growth. This is especially beneficial in older buildings and homes with solid, traditional construction.

  • High Durability and Beautiful, Natural Finishes

Despite their gentle formulations, eco-paints are known for their excellent coverage, long-lasting durability, and rich, natural colour depth. They often create soft, matte finishes that enhance the character of interior spaces while maintaining easy application and maintenance.

No 2. The dust-free painter

I use a Festool CTL MIDI dust extractor (that I nicknamed ‘Uncle Fester’) paired with a Festool RTS 400 Req sander to create a virtually dust-free working environment. My dust extractor captures over 99% of particles during preparation. When I sand or prepare surfaces, this machine captures the dust right at the source straight from the orbital sander, rather than allowing fine dust particles to drift into your home environment.

This approach not only protects indoor air quality but also keeps your space cleaner and more comfortable to live in while work is underway. Clients regularly comment on how little disruption they experience — no dust settling on furniture, no haze in the air, no hours of wiping down surfaces afterwards. The space stays tidy, and the paint finish benefits from cleaner, more controlled preparation.

Because of the high suction and certified filtration, the air remains much cleaner. This also helps reduce the need for post-job clean-up and reduces disruption — meaning the space is restored faster and more thoroughly.

The CTL MIDI has a Certified Full-Unit HEPA design: According to Festool, all of their CT dust extractors (including the CT MIDI) are independently tested and certified to meet true HEPA standards (capturing particles down to 0.3 microns at 99.97% efficiency).

The high suction performance of the Festool CTL MIDI II is capable of a maximum volume flow of around 3,700 l/min (approximately 130 CFM) and a static water lift of up to 24,000 Pa (about 96 inches) in some specs.
